140 Years of Horton School.
This selection of items from Horton School’s past is reproduced from a small pamphlet, compiled by
Audrey M. Look, in Horton school’s Centenary year of 1960. Hopefully you will find them both
interesting, and amusing.
1. The first log book for the school is dated 1886. The first entry is about a girl called Florry. Her
Mother wrote to say that Florry had fallen down stairs, but her brother had said she had gone off
to the fields with her Fathers breakfast.
2. Over 30 children brought their own dinner, and the teacher gave them a mug of cocoa for a penny.
3. In 1909, Mrs. Harford and Mrs. Ward handed out prizes for the best collection of leaves.
4. In 1910, the children went to Chipping Sodbury to hear the Proclamation of King George V.
5. In 1911, the Headmaster ordered some red flannel from Mrs. Gales for girl’s petticoats.
6. 1912 saw the first gardening classes in Horton School. the next year the flag pole was removed
because it was unsafe.
7. In 1913, Mrs. Harford paid for a dentist to come to see the children at school. 20 children had
their teeth extracted.
8. In 1914 the girls had cookery. In 1915 they had shorter hours at school because there was a lack
of coal, and in 1916, the school was heated by wood and one oil stove. The same year, the
children were let out of school to see a flying machine in the air.
9. In 1929, the school had a wireless.
10. In 1941 the school had hot dinners at 1d. The children brought their own vegetables.
11. In 1942, the school had about 2 days holiday, to help their Fathers plant potatoes.
12. In 1948 it snowed. Only 10 children were at the school.
13. In 1958 Miss Burgin became the Infants teacher. In 1959 she became Mrs. Tyzack. In January
1959, a climbing frame was put in the playground. In the same year, the school had permission
to have P.E. in the reservoir field.
14. In 1960, the school took part in a music festival at Colston Hall.
